K
Stands for Kilobyte. One kilobyte equals 1, 024 bytes.
KBPS
Stands for Kilobytes per second. It is a measure of bandwidth.
KEI
Keyword Effectiveness Index. A measure of the effectiveness of a keyword in terms of search frequency and competition for the keyword.
Kerning
The horizontal space between letters in a word.
Keyword
A word or phrase that a user believes is relevant to the information he or she is seeking. The user enters keywords into an online search form. The search engine then examines each record in its database to find those documents that match the keywords. A keyword search(as opposed to a concept search) is a search for documents containing one or more words specified by the user.
In layman's terms:
Keywords are words that are key or important words. Users type in a keyword in the search engine to find the relevant websites associated with that keyword. Let's us "Vancouver Web Design" as an example. As a user I would go to Google (this is my preferred search engine) and type in " Vancouver Web Design". The search engine would then give me websites with this word in them. Keywords can be one, two, three or more words, depending on how specific your search is.
Keyword Analysis
Is when you check to see what keywords your visitors are using or will be using when searching for your website. There are many ways to do a keyword analysis. Read more about keyword analysis.
Keyword Searching
Using a word or combination of words to search an electronic resource (CD-ROM, search engine, online catalog or database. Keyword looks for words in titles, corporate names, subject headings, and contents notes.
Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing refers to optimizing your web pages for Search Engines instead of your visitors and could impact your image as a company. This does not violate Search Engines Guidelines, however it might drop your conversion rate of visitors dramatically since it looks and reads out of context, is as close to spam as you can get. It is a technique where too many instances of the keyword are put into a web page without any context or use to make it keyword rich or increase keyword density. This practice is considered spamming and should be avoided at all times.
Keyword Prominence
Describes how high a keyword is found on a web page. The higher the keyword is, the more weight it is given by the search engine because the more important words of a web page are generally placed near the top of the page.
Keyword Weight
Denotes the number of times a keyword appears in a page as a percentage of all the other words in the page. In general, higher the weight of a particular keyword in a page, higher will be the search engine ranking of the page for that keyword. However, repeating a keyword too often in order to increase its weight can cause the page to be penalized by the search engines.
Landing Page
The specific web page that a visitor ultimately reaches after clicking a search engine listing. Marketers attempt to improve conversion rates by testing various landing page creative, which encompasses the entire user experience including navigation, layout and copy.

Link Bait
Link bait is any content or a feature on a website that compels users to place links to it from other websites. Attempts to create link bait are frequently to increase search engine placement.
Link building
Is a SEO technique where one increases the number and quality of incoming links from external sources with the intention of increasing a web page's link popularity, thus helping increase a web page's position in the search engines.
Link popularity
A raw count of how " popular " a web page is based on the number of backlinks it has.
Link text
The text that is contained within a link. For example, Vancouver Web Page Design is a link that contains the link text " vancouver web page design ".
Lossy
Used to describe file compression methods that discard file information in order to make a file smaller.
Lurking
In Internet culture, a lurker is a person who reads discussions on a message board, newsgroup, chatroom or other interactive system, but does not participate.
Linx
Linux is a new operating system developed by a Finnish programmer named Linus Torvald. Linux is free and the source code is all 'open'. That is, any one can work on the Linux operating system and then post new code to improve it. This concept is known as 'Open Source'. IBM has adopted Linux as a standard. It is a new system and there are tradeoffs to using it.
Lynx
A text-only Web browser, originally developed at the University of Kansas in the US. Now supported by a team of volunteer enthusiasts worldwide. Lynx forms the technical basis for the menu systems used by many Canadian community networks. The name is a pun on the word 'links.'
